Vij’s Rangoli Bar Manager Andrew Schneider Does ‘The Dishes’

The Dishes is a new Scout column that asks Vancouverites to walk us through a map of their ideal day and night on the town. We’re talking breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night cocktails. Tax and tip included.

For this week’s edition of The Dishes, we ask Vij’s Rangoli bar manager Andrew Schneider to show us on the map exactly where he gets his fill of Vancouver. We begin, naturally, at the fixed point of…

Good morning! What’s for breakfast/brunch?

If I’m up early enough for breakfast it’s got to be something casual and decadent like Locus on Main Street. Good beer (if it’s a weekend breakfast) and flavourful, unpretentious food and atmosphere.

Where should we meet for coffee/tea?

49th Parallel. Almost entirely because I love donuts and I have no self-control.

Now we’re hungry again. What’s for lunch?

Hey look at that: Anh and Chi [pictured at top] is just down the block from where we got coffee. They’ve got delicious Vietnamese food, thoughtful and creative cocktails, and it is cheap like lunch should be. A great dinner spot, too!

Who has you figured out at Happy Hour?

Since I’m probably not allowed to say Rangoli (which has the best Happy Hour in town), I’ll say the Happy Hour at L’Abattoir is dynamite. It is short but very sweet with 50% off their ridiculously good appetizers.

What’s for dinner?

I have consistently had great experiences at AnnaLena. They are the total package of top notch food, drinks, and service.

What’s for dessert?

I rarely eat dessert—not because I’m on a diet but because I’ve usually gorged myself on dinner already and can’t eat anymore. I like an after dinner cocktail. The Brandy Alexander at Pourhouse is perfect.

Where are you taking us for late night cocktails?

Campagnolo Upstairs. A not so hidden gem that somehow successfully combines the decor of a 70s Rec Room with that of a hunting lodge. But the décor doesn’t really matter because the cocktails are some of the best in the city.

Wine Seller, Incense Maker and Tea Drinker, Rasoul Salehi, Does ‘The Dishes’

Rasoul's palate and sense of smell are finely tuned, translating to a next level appreciation of food and wine, making him a great resource to draw on for a list of fantastic places to dine in Vancouver - going above and beyond by answering a few questions that we didn't even ask!

Francis Arevalo Does The Dishes

Get acquainted with the Vancouver-based, Filipino-Canadian rapper and producer - and whet your sonic and stomach appetites - via his recommendations (heavy on Filipino flavours) for eating and drinking around town.

Kate Snyder Does ‘The Dishes’

In this edition, we consult the Co-Founder and Principal at Studio Roslyn - the Vancouver-based interior design and creative consulting firm behind several of our favourite local restaurants and other spaces - not for design advice, but to find out about her favourite places for eating and drinking around town...

Sunja Link Does The Dishes

We already know that the local clothing designer and owner of Main Street boutique and spa, Sunja Link Body Shoppe, has discerning taste when it comes to the products and items that she puts on her body. So we're unsurprised that she's equally thoughtful about what food and drink she prefers to put into it.
