Threefold Brewery Collective Takes Over the Old Andina Space on Powell Street

Set to open in early 2025, Threefold Brewery Collective — a collaboration between Slow Hand Beer Company, Boombox Brewing, and Temporal Artisan Ales — is taking over the address formerly home to Andina Brewing (1507 Powell Street). By transforming the historic 119-year-old factory-turned-brewery (which has been waiting for its next chapter since Andina closed in April 2023) into a shared production hub and craft beer tasting room, the three breweries have joined forces to address the challenge of having outgrown their spaces and satisfy their respective long-harboured desires to expand.

This venture isn’t just about solving logistical problems, though — it’s about building a shared purpose. If you’re an avid supporter of Vancouver’s brewery scene already, then you know that each of Threefold’s trio of beer brands brings something unique to the table: for Slow Hand, it’s crisp and clean lagers; whereas Boombox throws down bold, hop-forward brews; and Temporal ferments some truly masterful barrel-aged creations. Also, it’s worth stating early on, that Threefold isn’t a “contract brewery” operation, and it hasn’t bought out the individual breweries and their unique identities, either. It’s simply serving as an umbrella brand for the trio of still-independent breweries, working with them to act as a platform to amplify their crafts.

The collective is designed to help each brewery grow, experiment, and serve their beers to locals and visitors alike in a way that stays true to their values. Together, they’ve created a hub for craft, creativity, and collaboration to thrive. Whereas, as its own entity, Threefold will focus on running the tasting room, creating a space that’s as collaborative as it is innovative.

“We came together to create something bigger than any one of us,” the team explains. “Threefold is about championing craft and celebrating the beers we’re proud to make.”

The eye-catching bright yellow façade of the building won’t change either – all of the reimagining will be contained within its interior, via a design blending 70s hi-fi vibes with the welcoming warmth of a European beer hall and sleek lines of modern design. 1507 Powell Street’s industrial bones will be enriched by wooden accents, honouring the building’s history while simultaneously reflecting the vision of its new tenants.

Co-owner Matt Kump recently offered Scout a walkthrough of Threefold’s roughly 9500 sq ft space. Though still in its raw phase, the renderings bring the vision to life as a room that feels communal yet still is imbued with the very different personalities of each of its three inhabitants. When the tasting room opens next year, beers from Slow Hand, Boombox and Temporal will all be available to enjoy on draught and packaged to-go, offering a rotating selection with ample appeal for both casual and well-seasoned beer drinkers alike. And because inclusivity is the key to any community-minded venture, non-alcoholic options will also be available. Events and special beer releases will keep the space lively; and although for now the food program remains under wraps, the Threefold crew is committed to the idea of delivering dishes that complement the exceptional quaffs flowing from their taps.

Vancouver’s brewery scene has seen a lot of shifts over the past year or two – including no small number of closures within city limits and on its outskirts. Whether Threefold is a signal from the future about where things are heading for the local industry; a forward move, past the stages of grieving its losses; the new model for Vancouver breweries (i.e. small breweries itching to get out of their cramped quarters, going ISO finding the right business “roommates” to peacefully, positively and collaboratively cohabitate with in a bigger space) – who knows? Threefold didn’t explicitly say as much, but the individual parts are strong and so is their joint vision AND conviction/commitment to doing something different.

To see how it all pans out, stay tuned here for any major news developments on this project and for an official opening date announcement in the near future. Keeping locked into each of the involved brewery’s Instagram pages – @slowhandbeer, @boomboxbrewing, and @temporalbeer – doesn’t hurt either!
