Remember all the hullaboo concerning the Fraserhood restaurant named after Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar? Well, a restaurant in Australia is kicking the stupid up a notch.
The Melbourne eatery is called Pablo’s Escoburgers, and the main attraction is a burger served “with a line of white garlic powder placed on top of a bun together with a fake US$100 note next to it. Another meal is said to come with a clear plastic bag that features white powder and spoon.” Get it? Because cocaine.
Predictably, many keyboard warriors are offended by the restaurant’s name and menu items, accusing them of cultural appropriation, promoting violence, glorifying drug use, ruining people’s days, and so on. In response, the owners of Pablo’s Escoburgers defended themselves with a simple explanation that amounted to “We’re just Australians with a sense of humour.” Via Design Taxi:
“We are very proud of our burgers but we do also understand that Pablo Escobar was a horrible man who destroyed the lives of thousands of Colombians. We do not condone, idolize or promote Pablo Emilio Escobar or his actions in anyway. We are however Australian and know how to have a laugh about a good play on words. Hard not to offend someone in 2019. Take the high road people, put it to rest and learn to forgive and forget! Either way we love you all the same in a very ‘unpablo’ way and know you will love our burgers. Enjoy!”
