New Cup Share Program Now in Action at Four Coffee Spots Around East Van

All images taken from the CUPPY website.

We’re a pretty satisfied bunch, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t covetous. Sometimes we see things out there that we just must have. Cool Things We Want is an archive of those earthly desires.

Like its chipper name implies, CUPPY is your friendly local cup share program, currently in place at four neighbourhood coffee spots in East Vancouver, with two more locations in Kitsilano and Fairview pending.

The idea is super simple: registered members of CUPPY get use of their signature environmentally-friendly cups whenever they buy coffee to-go at any of the participating establishments, not only alleviating some of the stress of remembering your own mug but also the environmental toll your wax paper cup usage takes on the planet.

You’re allowed up check out up to two CUPPYs for two weeks at a time. When you’re done, you simply drop it off for cleaning and reuse at any CUPPY cafe location. All of the cups are made from 100% recyclable polypropylene with a nifty adaptable lid that accommodates hot or cold drinks with a pop-up built-in straw. It also features a sweet little graphic of a perplexed looking polar bear adrift on a tiny iceberg. Point made.

Even better, last we checked CUPPY membership was also entirely free, unless you’re the squeamish sort and opt to purchase your own personal lid for a small fee. Get the full lowdown and register yourself here.

Why it matters: With billions of disposable coffee cups tossed each year around the world, sustainable solutions such as CUPPY – a small local business working with other small local businesses to make change – are a step in the right direction.
