Epic 1959 Road Trip From England Through the Sahara to Southern Africa and Back

The 60 year old photographs from this epic road trip taken by three friends (Tony, Collyn, Rex) during the beginning of the end of Europe’s colonial rule of much of the African continent – are as breathtaking as they are unique timestamps of time and place. Their ride? A military surplus runway control vehicle they purchased for the equivalent of $160 USD.

This “video” documents a journey made across Africa and the Sahara Desert in 1959/60. It uses color slides shot during the journey and shows how images from the past can be given a new lease of life.
