Chef Curtis Luk & Ex-Fable GM Chase Macleod To Open Casual ‘Mission’ In Kitsilano

mission
First time restaurateurs Chase Macleod (ex-GM at Fable) and Curtis Luk (ex-Chef at The Parker) have taken over the short-lived August Jack location at 2042 West 4th Avenue in the heart of Kitsilano.

Their plan for the 2,500 sqft space sees a casual but capable 60 seat restaurant showcasing the seasonal diversity of British Columbia through affordable, ever-changing tasting menus in a bar-facing dining room and a la carte bites in a breezy window lounge warmed by a fireplace.

Their name for it – Mission – not only references the journey they’ve been on to go into business for themselves but also the work it takes to do locavore food. It’s also a nod to the white-washed walls and the somewhat sacerdotal vibe of the address (low, arched, crypt-like ceilings).

Luk is a really conscientious, progressive, thoughtful guy who has an endearingly academic affection for local ingredients. He knows BC’s foodscape backwards and forwards, so it’s fair to have high expectations of his kitchen. On the drinks side of the equation, I’m told we can expect a wine list designed to pair with Luk’s menus, as well as a properly made cocktails. They’re licensed until 1am, and they want a share of the West Side’s post-shift, late night crowd.

Though the images below might suggest that they’re a long way from opening day, they’re already looking at Friday, June 12th for soft launch. Take a look…

    1. Is that the old Distillery space?
Hope they do really well – and I hope they can get their music curated by Zulu to keep things “in the neighbourhood”.
