Vancouver, BC | “Between the prep list and the payroll, when’s the last time you updated your workplace policy manual?” For most independent restaurant operators, the answer hovers somewhere between “never” and “when I opened.” That’s exactly the problem the Chefs’ Table Society of BC set out to solve with their Culture Shift program, a new 32-piece toolkit, built for (and by) the industry, offering small restaurant teams practical ways to improve culture and save time.

The toolkit covers everything from onboarding checklists and mental health support to “offboarding” and harassment prevention — things that would otherwise take months to create. It’s like having an HR department in your back pocket.

What is the Culture Shift Toolkit?

After years of research, collaboration, and pilot testing, the Culture Shift team is finalizing a 32-piece Workplace Culture Toolkit aimed at small- and mid-sized restaurants in BC. Each tool is meant to reduce stress and support teams — without the need for an HR department.

The tools cover topics like:

Setting Strong Expectations for New Workers
Onboarding and Orientation
Mental Health and Communication
Performance Development and Coaching
Sample Employment Contracts and Benefit Overviews

The newest batch of tools includes:

Manager’s Guide to Bullying & Harassment
Speak-Up Policy Template
Manager Orientation Checklist
Employee Offboarding Guide
Social Media and Mobile Phone Use Policies

Now Seeking Real-World Testers

The Culture Shift team is looking for a small group of restaurant owners to beta-test the full toolkit before it’s launched province-wide.

Participants will:

– Get a personal walk-through of all 32 tools
– Share feedback with the development team
– Receive early access to the final version of the kit

With burnout at a high and expectations growing for transparency, communication, and care in the workplace, this toolkit helps owners meet the moment — and still get through service. This initiative is about creating small, smart changes that make restaurant work more sustainable.

Interested in testing the toolkit? Email the Culture Shift team at [email protected] to schedule a walkthrough and get early access to the full set of tools. One-on-one toolkit support, with team members available to come to your business in-person, is available through the end of August.
