Chef Kris Barnholden To Open “Mis Trucos” On The Davie Strip

Chef Kris Barnholden (most recently Andrey Durbach’s chef de cuisine at Parkside) is opening a new modern Mediterranean tapas restaurant in the heart of the gaybourhood at 1141 Davie St (the old Davie Village Cafe location). The new spot, opening late July, will be called Mis Trucos (“My Tricks”). Full gallery and info after the leap…

Barnholden toiled and trained at several restaurants locally and internationally (including the Michelin-starred Chez Bruce in London), and wrapped up his tenure at Parkside the night it closed down for its L’Altro Buca chrysalis. This is his first roll of the independence dice.

The 1000 sqft location, which is not without its challenges, was picked up in May. Barnholden is aiming to give it 60 seats with a 6 seat bar and a 25 seat deck out back. It’ll be induction cooking mostly (no hood), and tapas plates will be priced between $4 to $8; sharables in the neighbourhood of $10 to $16; and specials in the same range. “Nothing will be over $20”, he says.

The all Spanish and Portuguese wine list will see six reds, six whites, and six roses, all by the glass at prices that will range from $6 to $14 (wine guy Kurtis Kolt from Salt Tasting Room is helping him out on this score).

Barnholden is hoping that Mis Trucos will have the Davie Village Cafe’s 2:00am liquor license grandfathered in, which would be pretty dang sweet. A late night tapas joint. Go figure.

  1. This is awesome! Davie is finally growing up! With Bin 941, La Brasserie and now Mis Trucos there are some great spots on the strip! Congrats, I’ll be there!

  2. I was at the last Thursday preview opening of Mis Trucos and it was awesome. Great food that was tasty and a bit challenging for Vancouver palates which is welcome. As well as great cocktails and friendly, unpretentious staff. The interior is a calm, minimal, white and wood environment with a nice back patio. I can’t wait to go back and try the full menu. A great new spot in the Davie Village.
