The Goods from Vessel Liquor
Victoria, BC | Since opening doors in December 2015, Vessel has become Victoria’s hub for all things wine, beer, spirits, cider, and the conversation and culture surrounding them. Our locally-owned, independent company was built around supporting authentic products and producers, from our BC backyard and from around the globe.
Awarded Best Liquor Store in Victoria (six times!), Vessel remains even more committed to serving the community. In 2022 we greatly expanded the footprint of our store, allowing for hundreds more listings. And in 2023, we expanded provincially, with an extensive new website and online store, allowing customers from across BC to shop Vessel from home.
Dads, grads, and the Summer Solstice: there’s a lot to cheers to this month. Here are our fresh picks for June:
MADE IN BC
Tantalus Riesling 2024, Niagara, Ontario ($32.99)
Tantalus makes Riesling from Niagara?! What a great opportunity to try a BC Riesling master try his hand at working with other legendary Riesling. This is one of the many 2024 CIBC (Crafted In BC) wines that local winemakers were permitted to make, after a devastating harvest knocked out the majority of vineyards in the Okanagan and Similkameen. True to Tantalus style, this is juicy and citrus forward, perfectly balanced between racy acidity and a touch of residual sugar. A rare chance to try something new and adventuresome. Go Canada! ZERO PROOF ALL FUN
Wild Folk Vermouth Spritz, Calgary, Alberta ($4.99 / 250ml)
This zero proof botanical sparkler deftly balances bitter and sweet; harmonizing hops, basil, ginger, and coriander into a lightly fizzy all-day aperitivo. Perfectly pocketable size. Find it online.
NOT YOUR AVERAGE SINGLE MALT
Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Whisky, Hokkaido, Japan ($94.99 / 700ml)
This single malt comes from Nikka’s first distillery, Yoichi distillery, built in 1934. Founder Masataka Taketsuru chose Yoichi in Hokkaido because of the similarities to Scotland, where he studied. Yoichi has well-integrated peatiness from the traditional coal-fired distillation, as well as a briny hint delivered by the sea breezes during aging.
