31 Year-Old “Kettle Of Fish” Set To Close For Good Tomorrow

RIP the Kettle of Fish. The old beast at 900 Hornby St. is closing tomorrow (Sunday). News 1130 reports:

Vancouver restaurant A Kettle of Fish is closing its doors on Sunday after 31 years in business at the corner of Hornby and Pacific Streets, but the co-owner says don’t blame it on the bike lanes. Riley Anderson says there were other factors that led to the decision, which was made about a year ago. “The bike lane for us is maybe one of them, but there’s also been the HST, the strength of the Canadian dollar, and new drinking and driving regulations as well.”

There’s always something else to blame for a restaurants decline beyond its own operational failures. Reasons abound. But what about conceptual stagnation? Lease issues aside, the slow fall of KoF could very well have been an inability to adapt to a new generation’s tastes. Our dining landscape is decidedly different today than it was a decade ago (nevermind three decades), so perhaps its failure to change with the times and market to a younger, more local crowd was partly to blame. In any event, it’s never good to a see a restaurant close. Here’s hoping all the staff both front and back land on their feet.
