On Matching Bike Tires, Local Looks, And Rocking The Bay On Your Feet

IMG_0109

by Robyn Yager | In celebration of New York Fashion Week, here’s an article discussing the alarming disparity between its perceived luxury and employment deficiencies within the trade. “Fashion internships have been classified as one of the least paying and worst treated positions.” How glamorous.

Known for her sustainable and airy fabrics, Nicole Bridger introduces her Fall 2013 collection consisting of jewel tones, blacks, deep grays, and Bridger’s staple draping (the sort of line to jumpstart your Fall wardrobe).

Want to show some pride for this city but don’t want to look like a total tourist? Check out these prints by Milk Milk Lemonade featuring some of Vancouver’s most recognizable landmarks and venues like the Astoria, the East Van cross, the Waldorf (RIP), and more. You can get yours online at Ella Kirk’s Etsy.

The Mod Scene is a subculture that began in Britain in the 1950’s and continues today thanks to a very loyal and dedicated group of individuals. Photographer Carlotta Cardana’s images depict couples presently living the Mod lifestyle. The result is a flashback; a look at those individuals who live, breathe, and currently live in the past. Check out the series and other works here.

One of the best ways to transition into Fall is to get a fresh and new but lightweight jacket that works for all seasons. Consider this made-in-Canada flat lapel blazer in navy with a poppy coloured collar from Smyth’s Fall 2013 collection. The brand is available at Bluebird on Alberni, Holt Renfrew, or Rebecca Bree Boutique. Check out the rest of their Fall 2013 collection here.

Nouvelle Nouvelle now has online shopping! Scrolling through their Tumblr was too much of a tease, so their new ECommerce is just what the wallet needs. Options include buying online and picking up in-store, or doing it the “old fashioned” way and getting it shipped to your place of residence. Go ahead and breathe a sigh of shopping relief.

The Hudson’s Bay Company teams up with Jack Purcell in the creation of two shoe designs featuring fabric from our country’s famous green, red, yellow, and blue striped wool blanket. Love ’em or hate ’em, they definitely take someone secure in their nationality to rock their patriotism on their feet. Admittedly, they look pretty slick too – not too overtly Canadian yet Canadian enough (in other words, they’re exactly Canadian).

Try this look for Fall. Inspired by the Jason Wu Spring 2014 show at New York Fashion Week, the trend is to play up the eyes with a modern smoky look and leave the lips to their own devices. It’s versatile enough to go from morning to evening.

On Thursday September 12th, join the style editor of FASHION magazine, Joy Pecknold, at Joe Fresh on Granville Street for a night of sips, snacks and shopping (20% off this night only). RSVP here. The event runs from 6pm-9pm.

Local looks and wants deciphered from the photographs up top…

#1 This cyclist had the right idea over on Dunsmuir: denim, yellow shoes, striped socks, and red-rimmed bike tires.

#2 Waiting for her ride in style: a perfectly coiffed bun, red blouse, polka-dot shorts, and smoking slippers (probably complete with her favourite tune).

#3 The Hudson’s Bay Company x Jack Purcell collaboration.

#4 For warmer temperatures wear a summer dress with your go-to sandals and a statement necklace. When it gets a little chillier, throw on a leather jacket, some tights, and your favourite black boots.

#5 For breakfast, an armful of tattoos and a denim romper.

#6 Cut the bottom off an old denim jacket to get a frayed edge and laissez-faire look.

#7 Until next year, Chinatown Night Market! Until then, reminisce with this tote by Janice Wu over at Eugene Choo.

#8 An off-the-shoulder city skyline shirt with a cream flowing skirt = the perfect afternoon shopping outfit.

#9 Biker back patch and cell phone. Gastown or bust.
