The GOODS from Bittered Sling

Vancouver, BC | This week, the Big Easy will sample a taste of the True North when Bittered Sling Extracts helps launch the inaugural all-Canadian Tasting Room at the 11th edition of Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans, July 17-21, 2013. The world’s premier cocktail festival, Tales of the Cocktail® brings together the industry’s most influential bartenders and spirit lovers from around the globe to share, learn and indulge in cocktail knowledge and culture through educational seminars, tasting rooms, competitions and more.

Taking place Friday, July 19 from 12:30pm to 2pm in the Regal Suite of the Royal Sonesta at 300 Bourbon St., “Wild Foraged Cocktails – The Canadian Shield” is the brainchild of award-winning mixologist/sommelier Lauren Mote and celebrated chef Jonathan Chovancek, creators and co-proprietors of Vancouver-based Bittered Sling. Mote and Chovancek, co-sponsors of the tasting room with Victoria Spirits, Pemberton Distillery, Collingwood Canadian Whisky and wild foraged spice provider Société-Original, will showcase homegrown, top-shelf spirits and cocktails that reflect truly Canadian terroir: vast forests, snow-capped peaks, pristine lakes and windswept grasslands. Joining Bittered Sling in bringing the Maple Leaf to the Mardi Gras are fellow Canadian bartenders Evelyn Chick (Blue Water Cafe), Robyn Gray (PiDGiN) and Grant Sceney (Fairmont Pacific Rim) of Vancouver, and Solomon Siegel (Catalano Restaurant & Cicchetti Bar) of Victoria.

Throughout Tales of the Cocktail, Bittered Sling’s popular line of high-quality, small-batch bitters and extracts will be available for purchase at The Bitters Market at the Octavia Bookstore in the Hotel Monteleone lobby, across from the world-famous Carousel Bar. Festival patrons are invited to drop by and meet Mote and Chovancek on Weds., July 17 (11 a.m. to noon and 3 to 4 p.m.), Thurs., July 18 (5 to 6 p.m.), Fri., July 19 (10 to 11 a.m.), Sat., July 20 (10:30 to 11:30 a.m.) and Sun., July 21 (11 a.m. to noon).

In 2010, Mote and Chovancek — regular exhibitors, panelists and speakers at Tales of the Cocktail® — launched the boutique Vancouver catering and events company Kale & Nori Culinary Arts, the predecessor to Bittered Sling, which was singled out as the Producer/Supplier of the Year this spring at the 24th annual Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards.

About Bittered Sling

Bottles-and-shakers

Bittered Sling celebrates the collaboration of chef Jonathan Chovancek and mixologist and sommelier Lauren Mote, who have contributed a combined 30 years of professional experience, knowledge and innovation to the Canadian food and beverage industry.

In 2010, Mote and Chovancek launched Vancouver-based boutique catering and events company Kale & Nori Culinary Arts — the predecessor to Bittered Sling — and quickly carved out a niche both locally and internationally for their unique products, dynamic and diverse cuisine and specialty cocktail creations. In 2013, Kale & Nori was singled out as Producer/Supplier of the Year at the 24th Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards for its brand of Bittered Sling Extracts.

Bittered Sling Extracts is a retail line of high-quality, small-batch bitters and extracts that provides palate, plate and potion with a subtle-yet-exciting fusion of homegrown ingredients and flavours. With aromatic labels such as Orange and Juniper, Plum and Rootbeer and Clingstone Peach, Bittered Sling underscores a singular and delicious irony that while all of their bitters are extracts, not all of their extracts are bitter. By the dash or the drop, each creation offers an intricate range of complex flavours that perfectly accentuates food, spirits and even sparkling water.

Twice a month over a six-month span, Mote and Chovancek host their popular and perennially sold-out Bittered Sling Bistro events at the Legacy Liquor Store in Olympic Village. A friendly competition between some of the region’s best bartenders now heading into its fourth season, each edition of the Bistro offers guests a feature spirit tasting accented by Bittered Sling Extracts and an indulgent three-course menu inspired by each particular spirit’s wide range of notes and character.
