SMOKE BREAK #1000: Our Physiological Aptitude For Exhausting Animals To Death

The San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert (Namibia/RSA/Botswana) run down a magnificent Greater Kudu bull in this riveting clip from the BBC’s excellent Life of Mammals series, narrated by the one and only Sir David Attenborough. The Kudu is a bovid antelope (related to cows), trumped in size only by the magnificent Eland and the rotund Cape Buffalo. If you’ve never eaten its meat before, it’s wicked delicious, and nowhere near as gamey as Africa’s other hoofed creatures. Some say it’s the best tasting game meat in the world. There are estimated to be nearly half a million of them in sub-Saharan African, with over 75% existing on private reserves or otherwise protected areas. In contrast, there are less than 100,000 San Bushmen alive today, out of which fewer than 3,000 are practising hunter gatherers.
