Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

JAY-Z & KANYE WEST – “Why I Love You” – Watch The Throne (Def Jam)

Hot hot track. I was ready to pan this record on principal, but I really believe these two masters of their style have delivered a hard-hitting LP of clever rhymes and phat beats. This track in particular has had me crooning along to the chorus at the top of my lungs, especially the part where they tune it up a third or whatever (it’s so awesome). Dude sounds like TV On The Radio but I don’t think it’s him.

The Playlist

WEED With Drug/Eighty 7” (Cruising USA)

Having just returned from touring the great country to the south of us, one has to wonder exactly what these Vancouver noise-poppers Weed told the border guards…some story, I’m sure. Anyway, this is their new EP: two massive songs that are surefire anthems. We dig Weed.

MOONFACE Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hoped (Jagjaguwar)

Strange things afoot in Mr. Krug’s brain; I wanna take a vacation in it and eat at the local taco truck to figure out how the hell he conceived this concept. It’s one of those full length albums that only has five or so songs but they’re just really long. Featuring Spencer’s trademark yelping and a LOT of circus organ. Cool.

RICHARD BUCKNER Our Blood (Merge)

One of the heaviest voices in American folk music delivers a long-awaited LP of somber songs of pain, suffering and heartbreak. “Dickner”, as I call him, lost this album twice in the last few years, once to technology and another to thieves. I guess he has plenty to be bummed about.

WAR ON DRUGS Slave Ambient (Secretly Canadian)

Who needs Kurt? I never liked him much anyway. War on Drugs emerge from the shadows of the former founder to prove they are more than worth their weight in gold. Listening to it now it’s hard to tell if Kurt Vile even belongs in modern pop music. Just kidding. No, but seriously, this record is awesome.

JACUZZI BOYS Glazin’ (Hardly Art)

Punk brat kids debut for Seattle fave label Hardly Art. Not sure what they mean by “Glazin’ for you” but if you enjoy rock and roll from the American 1970’s I recommend checking these Miami FL boys out.

MALE BONDING Endless Now (Sub Pop)

Great guitar riffs. Male Bonding’s 2nd LP on Sub Pop is a heavy jammer unleashed like only a power trio can do. There is something special about three piece rock bands. Bare-bones approaches make me feel like anything is possible.

The GIG

Thursday September 8 – Dam Funk @ Bar None

Lots of great shows coming up but I’ve selected Dam Funk as The Gig this week because I’m insanely pissed at myself for booking a trip to Victoria that night. Look, dancing is fun. If you listen to Dam Funk without pushing your feet, rolling your computer chair backwards and robot-dancing, you have the will of a warrior because this shit is so groovy…dam!
