Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE | “You Are A Tourist” Codes & Keys (Atlantic)

I don’t care who Ben’s wife is, I’m always gonna like this band, and that’s coming from someone who grew up in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. I’ll admit I’m missing the guitars a little bit, but hey, the melodies are still there and I think it’s growing on me so I’m gonna vibe this thing out for a couple weeks until I get sick of it. I feel like every time they release an LP I see an interview where their guitarist/producer Chris Walla name-drops a few legends. This time it’s Brian Eno. Not gonna say I agree with him on that one, but here at Zulu we care about the music, not the story; the substance not the form. Our neighbours from just over the border still got the subs.

The Playlist

WHITE LUNG / NU SENSAE Clown Life Tour 7” (Deranged / Nominal)

Two of the best punk bands in Vancouver team up for a chill little split for their latest tour.  A faithful Zulu customer just informed me that this 7” gives her anxiety, then she started slamming her forehead onto the counter so hey they must be doing something right! (she bought it shortly thereafter)

THEE OH SEES Singles Vol. 1 + 2 [LP] (Castleface)

Just what it sounds like… a collection of hyper frantic garage OOP and unreleased singles. Good shit!

FUCKED UP – David Comes To Life (Matador)

Love this band. Glad to see a proper follow-up to The Chemistry of Common Life. I guess this is a rock opera or something. Don’t care. Just want loud guitars and shit. Certainly delivers on that front. Digging the larger role the female vocals are getting too. Another very solid rock record. Also I think it’s a healthy release after the heartbreaker in Game 7. FREE ENGERY. Check out David Comes To Life: The Movie

THURSTON MOORE – Demolished Thoughts (Matador)

Beck & Thurst. Finally together. A pairing crafted by the gods of rock. Nothing surprising here : good.

KATE BUSH – Director’s Cut (Noble & Brite)

I really really really like this. So Ms. Bush delivers a sort of remix album but it’s not really. She rerecorded a bunch of her best songs and the results are sorta stunning.

FRANCIS & THE LIGHTS It’ll Be Better (Cantora)

This came out late last year but we just got it. Ain’t a guilty pleasure – I don’t believe in that shit. This means to me what Phoenix’s first big record meant when it came out. Didn’t know what I was getting myself into, now I can’t stop listening to it. RIYL Phil Collins; hilarious album-closer tracks, feeling good.

BOOGIE MONSTER – ZECHIMECHI [LP] (Needs More Ram)

Awesome local band. I always like when we get some new consigned stuff to the store – these guys bring the pain pretty hard. Ferocious guitar-and-drums duo from down the way. I love this twosome.

The Gig

Friday JUNE 24 MARK MCGUIRE – 360 GLEN

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Emeralds guitarist Mark McGuire arrives in Canada armed to the teeth with his array of guitars and loop stations. I mean I guess I’m assuming a little bit since I haven’t seen him yet but Living With Yourself was one of my favs from last year… I usually listen to Marky on headphones in my bed, staring at the ceiling while I leave my Christmas lights on demo mode, so I’m a little nervous about how I’m gonna react in front of the 360 Glen kids. Should be fun!
