Zulu Report: Yay For Sebadoh & The Doors Playing Vancouver…

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

currently on heavy rotation in the store…

The Doors playing Vancouver in 1970, from the new album Live In Vancouver 1970 (WEA).

This is a treat: from the vaults comes a live recording of The Doors playing the Pacific Coliseum in 1970. In 1970, Morrison was fully into his slobbering, bearded, drunken roadhouse hustler phase, and the band had become less psychedelic wanderers of the collective unconscious and more of a shit hot whiskey blues rock band. The band are in fine form playing this set, and having the great Albert King lend his guitar skills to a few tracks doesn’t hurt either. All said, this is a great snapshot of the last phase of the Doors’ storied career and reminder of how deadly a live act The Doors could be when they wanted. (ed. note: pretty sure my Mom was at this show!)

The Playlist

The records we can’t get enough of this week…

TIM HECKER Haunt Me Haunt Me…limited edition LP (Alien8)

Hecker’s sublime debut has never before been available on LP, until now. Haunt Me… is a classic modern laptop ambient meisterwork. Clear vinyl, gatefold jacket, beautiful.

THE WIPERS Is This Real? Youth Of America, Over The Edge ltd edition LP reissue (Jackpot)

The Wipers see their three classic long players reissued on wax. Classic NW post-punk, pre-grunge, and one of Cobain’s faves no less.

GREENHORNES **** (Wea)

After a lengthy absence, here is the triumphant return of these bluesy, garage rock vets. Classic-sounding garage pop-rock from there here and now, featuring Jack White’s buddy Jack Lawrence on bass. Deadly Detroit rock moves.

FENNESZ Endless Summer 2LP reissue (Mego)

One of the decade’s most critically loved albums is remastered and reissued on double LP. A stellar bonus track is included, but hardly necessary; Endless Summer is a flawless listen, and never sounded better than this particular pressing.

ROBERT WYATT Shleep (Domino)

Perennial Zulu fave – one of the few artists that we can all claim to love – sees his fantastic Shleep made available on vinyl. This issue includes a CD version of the album.

PSYCHEDELIC ALIENS Psycho African Beat (Voodoo Funk Academy)

Mind-blowing Afro fuzz guitar workouts from a band of true sonic-astral travelers.

GROUP DOUEH Beatte Harab (Sublime Frequencies)

From the always reliable, always enlightening Sublime Frequencies label we get a new collection of chants, mantras and guitar vamps from Group Doueh.

ZACH HILL Face Tat (Sargent House)

Zach Hill, the mathematician-drummer of Hella fame, issues a solo recording of mind-flaying technical wizardry, and a wild drumming style befitting that of an octopus.

TIMMY’S ORGANISM Rise Of The Green Gorilla (Sacred Bones)

One of our fave labels right now, Sacred Bones, gives us Timmy’s Organism’s latest scrap-heap of nuclear guitar rock. Vulgar.

The Gig

The upcoming show that we’re really looking forward to…

Fri FEB 11 SEBADOH – RICKSHAW

Lou Barlow will bring the scruff and the slack to the Rickshaw. Sebadoh’s last Vancouver performance several years ago is remembered fondly by all those who attended. This show should be a blast. It’ll be great to see what selections that the band decides to unearth from their vast catalogue of killer hits and whatsis misses. Sure to sell out, so buy tickets in advance.
