How To Turn Your Backyard Into A Kickass Edible Grow-Op

otif-022

by Michelle Sproule | It’s not too late! You can still turn out a healthy crop of edible goodies in your own backyard this summer, but you have to get on it now. But where to begin? There’s a really cool class going down this weekend that will get you on track. The School of Chalk is a Strathcona studio space in a converted school that offers creative talks, workshops, and events. This coming weekend, they are presenting Food Crops: Selection & Care with Grant Watson, and it will get you on your merry way to growing great food all by your self. If you’re wondering which crops will do well for your particular garden, how to get your soil ready to roll or whether or not you can just throw some seeds in the dirt and cross your fingers, Grant will sort you out.

Get all the details on the class after the leap…

Instructor Grant Watson will bring you up to speed with a crash course on Edible Gardening that will have your backyard in shape before you know it. Watson runs a Gourmet Gardening business and has many years experience working with a wide range of edibles – from the standard garden vegetables to lesser known annuals and perennials.

Expect a quick overview of garden planning, how to estimate soil health, as well as a look at the major plant groups including greens and herbs, legumes, root crops, berries and tree fruits.  There will be attention paid to important bits like planting times, the starting in trays vs direct seeding, the specific needs of plant groups, when to move plants and which plants to put next to one another for best results. Participants will get their hands dirty with activities related to garden planting including transplanting, direct seeding and organic fertilizing.
Come on – summer is close, get that garden going.
