Food Media Omnibus #535: The Year’s 10 Best New Restaurants

VANN091217_01_COVER

Once again we present our weekly Food Media Omnibus, a collection of all the local food writer’s most recent works in print. Enjoy…

——————————————————————————

They’re loving the Cactus Club in Edmonton.

In the Georgia Straight, Carolyn Ali does takeout turkey and Jurgen Gothe recommends the best local reds of 2009.

Elephant & Castle will open in Whistler’s old Milestone’s location. Run for your lives.

With the Olympics on the immediate horizon, news outlets around the world have been making mention of Zagat’s well-timed launch of their new restaurant guide to Vancouver. Special congrats to local food writer Tim Pawsey, aka the Hired Belly, who (if I’m not mistaken) once again supplied the word meat on the page bone. It”s just too bad ABC News can’t spell Araxi.

And speaking of Araxi, a jolly big clap for Top Table maestro Jack Evrensel, winner of the Whistler Chamber of Commerce nod for businessperson of the year.

And speaking of Tim Pawsey, he suggests we go on a Richmond scarfing safari via the Canada Line in the Vancouver Courier and recommends several Rieslings in the North Shore News.

And speaking of the North Shore News, Deana Lancaster reviews Park Royal’s new Red Door location.

Hugo Martin of the Los Angeles Times is a bit of a scaredy-pants wanker with touristy restaurant taste.

In the Globe and Mail, Alexandra Gill gives the amateur floor staff at The Observatory the merciless what for.

In the Vancouver Sun, Linda Bates checks out the recently rebranded Quattro on Fourth (now just Q4), while Mia Stainsby sees the restaurant recession through the prism of the Gastropod/Maenam and Fuel/Refuel switcheroos (bonus: Mia also talks Angus An out of his Pad Thai recipe).

And lastly, for the WE cover story this week (see above image) I compiled a list of my top ten best new restaurants. You can read the brief write ups on the paper’s website here, but the Cole’s notes version is as follows:

10: Pourhouse
9: Mis Trucos
8: Habit Lounge
7: The Diamond
6: L’Altro Buca
5: Refuel
4: Latitude
3: Au Petit Chavignol
2: Market
1: Maenam

That’s not a bad haul. For a year plagued by financial woes, I think 2009 kinda rocked. Let’s hope 2010 is even better. See you on the other side.

  1. Hugh Martin is a scredy-pants wanker that is reprinted in the Duluth News Tribune. We want those people to go to Cloud 9. It is where they belong.

Can you imagine tring to go to say Salt , and you can’t get in because a bunch of mid -western heffers are eating your iberian ham? (Shudder)

  2. Nice list but I find it shocking that Nook and La Brasserie aren’t on it. My one and two actually.

  3. La Brasserie was high up on last year’s list. Nook would have been my 11. 😉

  4. thanks for all the words Andrew and Michelle. Actually your site has become a regular hit for my foodie habit. Love the intel, the lists, interviews and “field” trips, the vids, and the music. I would say that Scout definitely lives up to its goal of promoting the sweet life. cheers. may 2010 be even better.

  5. Shocking list, didn’t you knock Pour house for their bad food? Who else are you drinking mates around town? Didn’t Fuel rebrand like a week ago?! That would definitely mean you’ve done research. PA leeeez!
