Poll: The Best New Restaurant

This Thursday, December 18th, the Westender will include my annual Top Ten list of The Best New Vancouver Restaurants of 2008.

I’ve already written my list and checked it twice. Now it’s your turn. You have one pick only in the poll below, but feel free to jot down your own Top 10 in the comments below.

(ed. note: though this post may disappear from the front page as new content is added, the poll will remain “live” under the Scout Poll tab in the front page sidebar until the morning of January 1st)

  1. 1. dB bistro
    2. Campagnolo
    3. Voya
    4. Irish Heather
    5. Le Faux
    6. Le Quercia
    7. Le Brasserie

I have not dined at the others options. dB was Friday and it was in a totally different class.

  2. This is way too hard to decide! Cactus Club and IK should definitely be recognized for being popular “go-to” restaurant or meeting places for standard dining. However, Voya and Cibo and their high-end positioning may possibly win over the affluent crowd. UVA is more wine and drinks than anything else but I’m biased because I wrote a positive review/article on them. I went to an event at Medina and they had wonderful tapas – but it’s different from a sit-down meal. I have yet to try out Piato (heard it got mixed reviews) and Pinkys. These choices are like comparing apples to oranges! They are both fruit (“restaurants”) but appeal to different tastes. All that being said, I’m going to have to think for a while before voting in this 🙂

  3. I just had dinner at DB Bistro Moderne. I am truly impressed – words cannot express how special the whole evening was. From the food, to the service and beyond – if there’s a restaurant to try, it has to be DB.

  4. Maybe it’s just the weather but I am loving the rustic Italian places like Cibo and Campagnolo. Haven’t tried La Quercia, but looks like I may have to!

  5. It looks like I am late for the party. Scout looks fantastic Andrew! Super job.

  6. We miss you in Vancouver, Chris. Thanks for checking us out. Scout “officially” launches on January 12th, so you aren’t late at all!

Come home soon, and say hi to Kim for me.

  7. I don’t understand how or why people are voting for db. Haven’t they been open for about a minute?

  8. I agree. That said, in my two visits there so far I’ve seen about 20+ regular Scout readers. Lots of media/bloggers and restaurant staff.

  9. In my books , Fraiche in West Vancouver is the top restaurant for 2008 .

  10. La Quercia has the best pasta in the bity – hands down! I’ll be checking out dB and Campagnolo soon so I can make an informed vote.

  11. First off, feeling pretty luck to be in a city that can put that list (among others) forward after the awesome ’07 year we had as well.

I am in Toronto at the moment and have tables at Nota Bene, Thuet, and Cowbell lined up, so that should give me a good scale to test the new Vancouver locations to those that the big smoke has on offer.

Quick comments on the list, well mostly db. db is very new, very nice, and in my two visits (don’t ask) I’ve had some stuff that has blown me away and stuff I know I wouldn’t get again. Still impressed me, but I certainly left after the second trip still not sure what we have but am excited to see where it will go.

Personally, it can’t quite compete with the Campognolos and La Quercias of the world, in that db doesn’t have that rustic, authentic identity of those two joints (and other likes it). It also didn’t reach the same heights as some experiences I had at Voya or Cibo, however, it also wasn’t nearly in that price range.

Long winded way to say that db impresses but for my dollar, it is stuck in the proverbial no man’s land of Vancouver dining. You can’t say its high-end with Lumiere next door, nor is it a 25-seat shoebox in the middle of Kitsilano suburbia that turns out simple, authentic fare. Its certainly a place that satisfies for the value (the staff really impressed me), but lacks a little certain je ne sais quoi – for now.

  12. I would also like to know who the one person is that voted for the Cactus Club…
