Joining me on the porch this past Cinco de Mayo was a case of Juan de Fuca Cerveza, which is Vancouver Island Brewing‘s craft take on the classic Mexican lager. Though you have to severely trim your lime wedges to get ’em in the can, it’s a light, satisfying brew (4.8%) that drinks crisp, clean and surprisingly sweet (and never mind that explorer Juan de Fuca was neither Mexican nor Spanish, but rather Greek).
This adjuncty style of beer hasn’t really been on my radar since late adolescence, so it was a deliciously nostalgic thing to get reacquainted, especially with a local product from a brewery that’s long been dear to my heart (VIB’s Piper’s Pale Ale was my gateway craft beer in the early 90s). Look for Juan de Fuca Cerveza in 6 packs, 12 packs and in the VIB mixer case.
