We Want to See the Creepy, Comedic Play ‘Kuroko’ When it Premieres Next Month

We’re a pretty satisfied bunch, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t covetous. Sometimes we see things out there that we just must have. Cool Things We Want is an archive of those earthly desires.

Even though I’m not much of a theatre-goer I want to go see the latest work from local playwright Tetsuro Shigematsu. Kuroko will premiere at The Cultch’s historic theatre next month with nightly performances from November 6-17 (excluding Remembrance Day).

The creepy and comedic story centres on a young female hikikomori – the Japanese term for a reclusive type – who has shut herself up in her bedroom, trading the outside world for a virtual one. After six years of self-confinement, an interaction with another Virtual Reality player leads her on a real life quest to the infamous Suicide Forest, presumably to save her father’s life.

Beyond broad acclaim in the theatrical world, Shigematsu’s motley CV includes less insular stints like: television comedy writing, co-hosting a very unserious CBC radio show and even an appearance on a reality TV series, reenacting a historic battle to the death.

Tickets are $26-59 each, available here. See you at the show!
