Search and Rescue Denim Co. is the service industry’s synonymous outfitter of cool, timeless, high quality aprons. Local baristas, bartenders, tattooists, barbers, butchers, florists and chefs have all been spotted in their gear. The Vancouver company recently launched their online custom apron builder so that anyone can customize and purchase an apron tailored to their needs and desires, whether it’s a one-off or enough to outfit a whole team. Bonus: the building tool is really f*ckin’ fun!

You start off by picking one of the three style options best suiting your needs and height. There’s the low-key Bistro half-apron, the slightly higher coverage flat front or the full-body split leg. There are five fabric types of varying colours to choose from: full-grain leather, vinyl, poly-cotton blend, heavy canvas or denim. Then you have your choice of cotton or leather neck straps (or go strapless); the lining material; the finer details such as hardware and stitching colours; and the number, style and placement of your pockets. They also do custom embroidery and/or affix your logo.

My first go at the builder produced a flat front five-pocket beauty in 12 oz indigo denim, with natural leather neck and waist straps, natural stitching and a pinstripe lining. I went sans logo but with the addition of some cheeky scripted chest embroidery. My total was $221 CAD — worth it considering this would likely be the best (and only) apron I’d ever buy!
