Ocean Wise Plastic Reduction Program:

The ocean is our planet’s life support system. It is the provider of food, recreation, transport, and even the oxygen we breathe. But the ocean is under threat. Our plastic waste is harming ocean life, damaging the marine environment, and is a concern for human health. And with nearly 90% of global fish stocks already overfished, finding and supporting sustainable fishing methods is more important than ever before.
As a food professional, you have the unique opportunity to make a difference. Will you join Ocean Wise in protecting and restoring the ocean?
Through two separate programs, Ocean Wise works with restaurants to address some of the greatest threats facing the marine environment: overfishing and plastic pollution.
The Ocean Wise Seafood Program, founded in 2005, was created to make it easy for everyone to choose sustainable seafood. With over 750 partners in more than 3,000 locations across Canada, we can all do our part to protect the long-term health of our oceans, lakes and rivers. Thanks to our national team of scientists as well as a global network of experts, our recommendations are based on the most up-to-date science. Find out how the Ocean Wise Seafood program can help you source and offer more sustainable seafood options on your restaurant menu so that you can be a leader in your industry. Our annual events include the National Chowder Chowdown Festival.
The Ocean Wise Plastic Reduction Program, launched in 2021, is a hub for food professionals like you to access tools and get support on your plastic reduction journey. Experts from Ocean Wise will help you understand your plastic use and make a plan to reduce, refuse, replace, re-use, or recycle unnecessary and harmful plastic. With Ocean Wise’s expert support, you can get ahead of Canada’s proposed single-use plastic ban, reduce your waste disposal costs, and enhance your reputation as an industry leader.
