Behind The Scenes At The Smithsonian Museum Of Natural History

A short film from Great Big Story gives us a glimpse of just some of the magic in one facet of the Smithsonian Institution, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. The sprawling facility has over 144 million different objects in its vast collections, with only a drop in the bucket of them on display to the public. The rest are within the realm of reference and ongoing scientific study, the reserve of a dedicated staff in possession of the world’s most charming titles, like “Curator of Mollusks” and “Vertebrate Zoologist in the Division of Birds”, not to mention the most endearing enthusiasms that remind us of how adorable scientists can be. Cast in point, from Dr. Robert Robbins, Curator of Lepidoptera: “The essence of my being is to know everything about butterflies. There’s a whole world out there that unless you look very closely you don’t see. It’s an interesting world, a fascinating world, and it is full of practical value for human beings.” Aw…hot chocolate and hugs for everyone!
