Around this time last year, I wanted a shift. I’d been spending too much time behind a screen and needed something real to throw myself into — something that involved physical labour, weather, dirt… and food, of course.
By May, I was working Saturdays with Glorious Organics at the Trout Lake Farmers Market. Easily the best call I made all year (thanks for taking me on, guys!). There was something about unloading their truck, bin by bin, and seeing what came out of the ground that week, that was exactly what I needed. But more than that, I liked the community. Chefs showing up early to buy direct. Regulars with carts and canvas bags. Familiar nods and conversations that pick up right where they left off the Saturday before. You can feel the history in those conversations — and the respect for both the work and the people behind the food.
Shout out to the folks who show up for it, and shout out to the farmers who make it happen.
The Market’s back at Trout Lake beginning Saturday, April 5th (until October 25th, 2025), from 9am to 2pm. The full Spring cast of farmers, bakers, cheesemakers, fishers, and foragers will be out there – including Glorious Organics with their beautiful salad greens. First week of the season and sunshine? Worth showing up for. See you there!
WHY WE CARE
Farmers markets are a great weekend ritual — but they’re also a direct investment in a healthier, more equitable food system. You roll up, grab fresh, seasonal produce from folks who actually know how to grow the stuff, and in the process, you’re cutting out chemical overload, skipping needless shipping, and getting vegetables that taste like they should. Every dollar you spend stays local, instead of drifting off to some industrial operation miles away – sorry about it USA. Bottom line? Farmers markets are a quiet but consequential stand for a better food system. Eat Local!
