Attention taco-lovers: this weekend take whatever measures necessary to factor a trip to Gastown into your itinerary, to bid a fond farewell to Tacofino, which has just announced its last day of service at 15 West Cordova on Sunday, August 18th.
Nine-plus years of business in Vancouver (especially this particular neighbourhood borderland) is nothing to scoff at, and the party-loving Tacofino team is aiming to pull off a full weekend of celebrations, beginning on Saturday, August 17th from 7-11pm (patio service ends at 10pm) with a surprise line-up of musical guests backing up local hip-hop group RUTS (more on that here). It’s an event they’re chalking up to nothing less than “one last legendary Gastown Saturday night”. The celebratory vibes will be rolling over to Sunday the 18th, with food and drink specials all-day-long (11:30am-9:30pm), while the music commences from 3-9pm. For this final festivity, guests will also see Tacofino Gastown’s own staff (past and present) taking charge of the tunes, via two back-to-back DJ sets. Keep close watch of the Tacofino Instagram feed here over the next few days to be in-the-know about all weekend celebration developments.
Since its opening in January 2015, 3,000-square-foot Tacofino Gastown has become a cornerstone of the neighbourhood’s restaurant scene. Scout has followed its journey closely since just days after news broke of Tacofino’s acquisition of the highly coveted (yet somewhat cursed “fixer-upper”) 15 West Cordova address, which sat vacant for a decade after its previous tenants, Pig & Whistle, closed shop. This, despite “attracting plenty of interested parties looking to capitalise on the neighbourhood’s rise” and being “a prime spot” due to being “right next door to the original Boneta and around the corner from Gassy Jack Square with entrances on both West Cordova and Blood Alley.” (Check out our June 2014 and December 2014 stories leading up to the official opening for more on our very first impressions. We also checked in on Tacofino Gastown with a cheeky TBT piece when they were five years deep, which you can find here.)
