Definitive Records asks interesting Vancouverites to think hard and select the three albums that anchor their musical tastes. Today we hear from restaurant industry veteran Miguel Quezada, who has worked in several popular Vancouver restaurants, among them L’Abattoir, Wildebeest and Pourhouse. He’s been the General Manager at the Fraserhood‘s popular Savio Volpe from the start, which is to say that he’s the guy responsible for its excellent soundtrack.

Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral | LISTEN | “Tom Breihan writing for Pitchfork said, ‘The greatest trick Trent Reznor ever pulled was convincing the world he was the devil.’ I was one of those fools and not long after diving deep into this album I turned Christian for a year.”

Tool – Aenima | LISTEN | “I spent a significant amount of my high school days burning trees in parked cars, listening to this band. I was a major Tool head. I spent hours dissecting the lyrics, reading their blogs, and embracing the metal wankery. As embarrassing as it is to have this as a definitive record, something about this band’s message pushed me out of my comfortable prairie life searching for a life that would… bewilder me. Reverberation Radio | LISTEN | This isn’t an album but a weekly playlist put out by band members from the Allah-Lahs. If you have been to Savio Volpe, and noticed the music selections there, it is heavily influenced by these guys. Every week there’s a loose theme; one week it might be 70’s Turkish psychedelic rock, the next Bossa Nova, or Krautrock; sometimes it’s all these genres in one week. It’s all over the musical map and never the obvious selections from artists, but rather their B-side tracks. Discovering this podcast was like having a cool older brother who lived through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s collecting records and chilling at the beach.
