Copain Wines, a Somm Darling From Sonoma County

The GOODS from Copain Wines

Sonoma County, CA | Perched on a hillside in the heart of Sonoma County sits Copain, a boutique winery specializing in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from well-renowned California winegrowing regions such as the far Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley. Founded in 1999, the winery’s name means “friend” or “buddy” in French, which is a perfect metaphor for Copain’s longtime mantra that wine is best shared with friends and family.

Over the past two decades, Copain has built a strong reputation and following among leading sommeliers and wine lovers for its classically-styled and restrained yet elegant Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that are a beautiful companion to a variety of food dishes.

The winery has always focused on producing wines that showcase the truest expression of each vineyard’s terroir. This winemaking point of view allows each vineyard and region to shine through with its best qualities for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the most minimalistic way.

“In our farming practices and in the cellar, we always approach winemaking with a ‘less is more’ mentality. By picking at a lower brix than most other wineries (around 22 brix), we find the fruit to have optimum ripeness showing layers, plentiful flavour, complexity and retain a fresh palate,” say Copain Winemaker Ryan Zepaltas.” “In addition, we ensure minimal winemaking intervention by using low percentages of new oak barrels for aging, and we ferment the vast majority of our wines naturally without any added yeast. All of this helps us create distinct wines that truly showcase a sense of place, like Anderson Valley and the Sonoma Coast,” he added.

Copain’s Tous Ensemble range of wines are a perfect example of Zepaltas’ ability to make wines that are the truest expression of each vineyard site. French for “all together,” Tous Ensemble pays homage to the wines’ sourcing from the far reaches of the Sonoma Coast, showcasing consistent, approachable fruit characteristics that retain their acidity and food-friendly appeal.

“The cool, foggy reaches of the far Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley excite me most,” says Zepaltas. “Our estate vineyards in these appellations are the perfect setting for getting slowly ripened, developing complex-flavoured grapes that we craft into powerful, yet elegantly styled wines that can age beautifully. Our style tends to have texture, tension, and a densely layered palate that fits best on the dinner table with friends and family.”

About Copain Wines | Founded in 1999, Copain has built a reputation of producing food friendly, balanced and expressive wines in the ‘light-and-bright’ style. Sourced from sustainable vineyard sites in Anderson Valley, Sonoma Coast, Mendocino County and Monterey County, the portfolio consists of three distinct collections—the Tous Ensemble wines, the Les Voisins wines, and the single vineyard designate wines. Copain’s style has long been inspired by the restrained and elegant wines of France’s Rhône Valley. The grapes are picked early to impart vibrant acidity and the wine undergoes minimum manipulation in the cellar. Coaxing lively, energetic wines with bright, fresh flavours has become Copain’s signature.
