Cambria Estate Winery, California’s Coastal Pearl

The GOODS from Cambria Estate

Santa Maria, CA | When you think of California wines, you typically think of Napa. However, there’s another long-standing wine region that is home to remarkable vines for winemaking. You might already be aware of it due to a certain 2004 movie (Sideways), but often the stunning Santa Barbara County is overlooked as a top wine destination.

Santa Barbara County is home to some of the most diverse soils and vineyards. Where the foothills rise up from the valley floor on the Santa Maria Bench sits Cambria Estate Winery. Family-owned, sustainably-farmed, and passionately tended by a team proud to be stewards of the remarkable property, each wine bearing the Cambria name is grown, produced and bottled on the estate. With vineyards dating back to the early 1970’s, Cambria Estate helped establish Santa Maria Valley as a world class wine producing region.

Founded by Barbara Banke and co-led by her two daughters, Julia Jackson and Katie Jackson, Cambria Estate is dedicated to inspiring women in Leadership In the vineyards, the cellars, and in philanthropy. Jill Russell, winemaker joined the Cambria team in 2017. Jill has lived in San Luis Obispo for more than ten years, and always had a love of the California Central Coast and Santa Barbara in particular, “when you’re walking the soils in Santa Barbara County, you’re thinking of the beach. You’re thinking of the sand. You have the wind in your face, the salty feeling.”

Being one of the quintessential wineries of Santa Maria Valley, Cambria is known for their renowned estate vineyards and selection of expressive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It’s initially what drew Jill to the opportunity of joining Cambria, “Santa Barbara growing region is very unique. We have the climate, we have the weather, this fog and wind that’s really great for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.” The wineries core wines are named after the two daughters vineyards, Julia’s Pinot Noir and Katherine’s Chardonnay.

“What inspires me about Santa Barbara is the spirit that we all have. The community is great. We all learn from one another and tell each other what we’re doing. Nothing’s hidden. I’ve had a lot of mentors down here” which includes Cambria’s former winemaker Denise Shurtleff, a long-time inspiration and true regional expert and now the winery’s General Manager. “We’re building both the region and each other up. I know that I want to spend the rest of my career here.”
