Search & Rescue’s Will Fosdick Does ‘The Dishes’

The Dishes is a new Scout column that asks Vancouverites to walk us through a map of their ideal day and night on the town. We’re talking breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night cocktails. Tax and tip included.

This week we asked Will Fosdick, the founder of Search and Rescue Denim, to tell us where he likes to eat and drink around Vancouver when he’s got his apron off.

Good morning! What’s for breakfast/brunch?

Mornings are often a challenge for my wife and I, as we have a 14 month old daughter who sleeps…occasionally. When we do get out for brunch I love Edible Canada on Granville Island (nice and close to work too). The Grilled Wagyu Steak and Eggs is my go-to, or if I’m feeling something sweet, the Mascarpone french toast is fantastic.

Where should we meet for coffee/tea?

I’ve been pretty loyal to both Main street and Granville Island JJ Bean for a number of years now. I am a guy who needs my caffeine in the morning so a quad Americano is a must. I’m usually in a rush, so their vegetarian Ranchero Wrap is perfect on the way to work.

Now we’re hungry again. What’s for lunch?

Most of my meals are either brought from home or purchased on Granville Island (since I’m there at the shop almost everyday!). Lately my favourite GI lunch is the Daily Curry from Sen Pad Thai in the Net Loft. It’s got a ton of flavour, can be surprisingly spicy and is super filling. Usually if one of our staff brings this back to the shop for lunch, it smells so good that everyone else gets it for lunch too.

Who has you figured out at Happy Hour?

This time of year if I can find a seat on a patio and a cold beer, I’m happy. If we’re in Kits we’ll head down to The Local or the roof top patio at Darby’s over at 4th & Macdonald.

What’s for dinner?

My staff gave my wife and I a gift certificate for AnnaLena, which we just used a few weeks ago and it instantly became one of my favourite Vancouver restaurants. Our server, Martin, was friendly, professional, and extremely knowledgable about the menu and in particular, the wines. We don’t get to go out for dinner as much lately since we have a baby, so we went all out and ordered half of the items the menu and nothing disappointed. I am still thinking about the house-made bread with smoked beef tallow butter. The buttermilk fried chicken, pate on sourdough, halibut, beef and their daily pasta were also superb.

What’s for dessert?

I like ice cream. A lot. So we’ll hit up Rain Or Shine over on Cambie, or Earnest Ice Cream on Fraser. I have yet to try an ice cream from either of these places that I didn’t like.

Where are you taking us for late night cocktails?

Pourhouse has been my consistant favorite for a long time now. One of my favourite things to do is pull up to the bar and spend an evening eating small plates and sampling cocktails. My wife isn’t a big drinker, but she absolutely loves their Clover Club cocktail. For me, I love (good) tequila, so their Harvest Moon coctail with Reposado Tequila, Punt e Mes, Salted Oloroso Sherry and Orange Bitters is perfect.

Sunja Link Does The Dishes

We already know that the local clothing designer and owner of Main Street boutique and spa, Sunja Link Body Shoppe, has discerning taste when it comes to the products and items that she puts on her body. So we're unsurprised that she's equally thoughtful about what food and drink she prefers to put into it.
