We Want One of Steven Brekelmans New Drawings

We’re a pretty satisfied bunch, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t covetous. Sometimes we see things out there that we just must have. Cool Things We Want is an archive of those earthly desires.

We want a drawing by Steven Brekelmans from his exhibition ‘New Drawings of bottles, cans, hats, cheese, sculptures, posters, casseroles, azaleas, canes, flags, trash bins, cacti, glasses, lighters, mirrors…’ on now at Chernoff Fine Art.

Artist: Steven Brekelmans
Piece: Fiddle-leaf fig, tombstone, undecided sign. Watercolour, gouache and ink on paper, 2018
Price: $550 each, framed with antiglare glass
Gallery: Chernoff Fine Art | on until Sat. Feb 23

The exhibition title gives you a pretty good sense of what you can expect to see in Vancouver-based artist Steven Brekelmans’ latest series of drawings. Steven brings together unrelated and impossible combinations of things, drawn in a comic-like way where objects appear super flat on the page. Potted plants and cacti are a common theme throughout (how hip!), combined with anything from ping pong tables to wine glasses, post-it notes to snare drums. Your mind immediately tries to form connections, create a story, or reflect on a memory.

The drawings are a continuation from his series of sculptures shown last year at Dynamo Arts Association, where original sculptures were displayed on shelves alongside everyday objects and knick-knacks.

We’re drawn to the sense of humour and play in these works. These are drawings that’ll put a smile on your face and we wouldn’t mind seeing one on our way out the door every day. There are 31 drawings in the series, and we want one, any one, but preferably one with a plant or cactus.

Steven attended Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, holds an MFA from the University of Victoria, and has shown his work locally and internationally. And if you’ve ever taken transit at Metrotown Station, you might recognize Steven’s brightly coloured log benches, made of cast aluminum.
