A few moments of reflection on freedom to celebrate Canada Day before I slip into the beer-swilling hoser good times (as my rights allow). I don’t think the Greeks had it better than we do, or that the Roman concept of the “citizen” was without fault, but I can’t help but like how obligation played a role in their version of what it meant to be “free”. We could all probably do better in serving our country – I know I certainly could – but I fear the idea of being beholden to it in the Athenian sense has long passed. I’ll take my passport, thank you very much, and the rest is entirely up to me.
Have a good and thoughtful one.
