New Exhibition of Paintings by Bobby Mathieson Opening Soon at Betamax

“Natural Plot Line” is a new exhibition of works by Toronto-based painter Bobby Mathieson coming to Hastings-Sunrise’s Betamax Gallery. The show, which runs until October 20th, officially kicks off with an Opening Night Reception on Friday the 14th, from 7pm to 11pm. However, the real excitement will be happening in the days leading up to the evening event, when Mathieson will be in the gallery painting two new pieces (one per day) in the old Italian style of “alla prima”, which translates to “first attempt”. The gallery will be open from Noon to 5pm on both Wednesday (12th) and Thursday (13th) so that the public can witness the artist in action from start to finish.

Here’s a bit more about the artist from the Gallery:

Mathieson captures historically or culturally significant moments in his work and expands on the emotional content through his paintings and imagery using vibrant shocking colour and form. Positioning historically and culturally significant subjects within a visceral and highly textured figurative expressionism, Mathieson’s paintings reflect the emotional complexity shaping his relationship to these figures through a portraiture that is at once provocative, grotesque and deeply reverent.

This sounds like a cool and unique opportunity to not only get a glimpse of Mathieson’s creative process and meet an exceptional Canadian artist, but also to get acquainted with Betamax itself, which just opened earlier this year. “Natural Plot Line” will be the second exhibit to go up in the gallery space, and we can’t wait to check it out!
