Listen Up, Vancouver: Burdock & Co is Having a ‘Taste Sound’ Dinner, Nov. 6th

“If high frequencies tend to make things taste sweeter and low frequencies bring out bitter – what happens when you actually ‘listen’ to the bioelectric changes of the food itself WHILE you eat it?” So implores musician/biologist, Tarun Nayar (you may know him by his musical nomer, “Modern Biology”), when spelling out the inspiration driving his upcoming collaboration dinner at Burdock & Co

By snagging a seat at the ‘Taste Sound’ table on Wednesday, November 6th, you’re not only signing up for an exceptional four-course meal created by Chef/Owner Andrea Carlson (with the help of her all-star kitchen team), you’re also agreeing to have your food ‘speak’ to you!

Okay, before you freak out, let us clarify: through the simple marvel of science, custom equipment designed by Nayar will allow diners to tune into a variety of the fruits and vegetables on their plates, by transforming their bio electric activity emissions into sounds heard through “silent disco style” headphones (supplied to each diner at the time of the event) during a portion of the dinner. According to Carlson, the ‘Taste Sound’ menu includes ingredients “that exemplify autumn – mushrooms will feature, as will fall greens like radicchio. Anything with life energy will emit the bio electric frequencies.” Furthermore, guests will be encouraged to “play” with their food in order to bring out its sounds, by partaking in some fun little science experiments. “Part of the fun is the experience of exploration for everyone. It’s not a rehearsed situation. It will unfold very organically.” Nayar will also be demonstrating his own musical creativity and ingenuity by playing a live score using raw ingredients.

Tickets aren’t cheap ($200) but in addition to a four-course omnivorous meal, they also include one helluva memorable experience and a questionably unbelievable story to tell, to boot. “I think this level of connection to fundamental bio electric energies is quite startling and really reminds you that the whole of the natural world is alive… Ingesting it can be a sacred and monumental connection to the world around us. As well as acknowledging our place in it.”

There are two seatings to choose from: 5pm or 8pm. Choose yours here now because space is extremely limited (we’re talking, only 40 spots total) and it will sell out!
