F*ck Yeah: We Want More Cool Collabs with Farms!

We’re a pretty satisfied bunch, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t covetous. Sometimes we see things out there that we just must have. Cool Things We Want is an archive of those earthly desires.

We don’t need new shoes, and Converse certainly doesn’t need our endorsement – that’s not what this is about. This is about giving props for turning us, and others, on to a cool sustainable nonprofit farm initiative via their latest collaboration with Sky High Farm Universe. (Although we’d be lying if we didn’t confess that the resultant kicks – made using previously worn, up-cycled work pants and overalls, and emblazoned with the Farm’s signature cartoon strawberry and moon locked in a heartfelt embrace – aren’t pretty dang rad. Simply see the picture above for proof of that.)

Here’s the rundown: New York-based Sky High Farm is actively “working to increase access to fresh, nutritious, locally produced food while investing in long-term, collaborative pathways to food security and food sovereignty” by providing their state’s food organizations with “high quality and culturally appropriate” food (all of the vegetables, herbs and animals that Sky High Farm grows and raises is doled out via these donations). Their off-shoot brand, Sky High Farm Universe, exists as a bridge between the farm and fashion/beauty brands they collaborate with, while also working to f*ck the wealth distribution and hierarchy system from the inside-out by ensuring that Sky High Farm always gets paid first. They also stipulate that all of their retailers make a donation to Sky High Farm before selling any of their products, and have systems in play to provide opportunities for a new generation of farmers. The bottom line: Sky High Farm Universe doesn’t feign to be anti-consumerist; rather, they have created a consumer culture model that ultimately advocates for something more meaningful and impactful (food security and sovereignty).

WHY IT MATTERS

Sure, it’s probably a safe bet to assume that the majority of consumers buying these shoes will be trend followers shelling out money for the latest hot collab without digging deep enough to appreciate the full story… but the bottom line is that the dollars they are shelling out will be going to a farm – and one that is doing rad things. The coolest thing here is that by effectively infiltrating the consumer chain, Sky High Farm is setting a precedent for more creative collaborations with farms and farmers, leading to real benefits for food systems. In short: it’s impressive to see a farm wielding its power in such a clever and unexpected way, by working with big, universal corporate brands and still maintaining the upper hand in the relationship while doing it. More of that, please!
