Amber Bruce Does The Dishes

The Dishes is a new Scout column that asks Vancouverites to walk us through a map of their ideal day and night on the town. We’re talking breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night cocktails. Tax and tip included

It’s been a few years since award-winning bartender Amber Bruce inaugurated our “New Breed” column, shortly after leaving her spot at Cuchillo to further hone her craft at The Keefer Bar, so we thought it was high time for her to brief us on some of her favourite food and drink spots in Vancouver.

Good morning! What’s for breakfast/brunch?

The Oakwood is always a solid choice – anything with their brussel sprouts is delicious, and if I’ve got a hangover I go for the patent-pending, tried, tested and true, hair of the dog: a spicy Caesar and an ice cold lager.

Oakwood (Closed) 2741 West 4th Ave. MAP

Where should we meet for coffee/tea?

I think my favourite coffee comes from Milano. I wouldn’t call myself a coffee snob, but a short Conca D’oro Americano makes me happy.

Now we’re hungry again. What’s for lunch?

Pazzo Chow – I get coffee and lunch here almost daily. I’m so lucky to have this tiny little hole in the wall so close to work. They offer a homemade soup, salad and entree-sized special that changes daily, and have great fresh pasta. It never fails to impress.

Who has you figured out at Happy Hour?

Pourhouse has a good Aperol/Cynar spritz for happy hour. I would also hit up Fanny Bay oysters or Oyster Express for cheap shucks and wine.

Oyster Express 296 Keefer St. MAP

What’s for dinner?

Depends on my mood, but I’m always down for tacos or sushi. For tacos I’m going to Cuchillo, or Tacofino; both have wicked pork tacos. And for sushi I’m going to General Public for the Tuna tempura and Devil’s Tail roll, Masayoshi for an unforgettable dining experience, or Yamato for just good cheap classic stuff.

Tacofino 2327 E Hastings St. MAP
The General Public 3289 Main St. MAP
Masayoshi 4376 Fraser St. MAP
Yamato Sushi 616 Davie St. MAP

What’s for dessert?

This is like asking me to pick my favourite child. That olive oil cake at Ask for Luigi is something special, but ice cream owns my heart and soul. Give me an affogato, or a basic-bitch banana split any day (or the popcorn sundae at Lucha Verde) and I’m a happy puppy.

Lucha Verde (Closed) 1326 Davie St. MAP

Where are you taking us for late night cocktails?

If I’m not headed back to home base (The Keefer Bar) for a late night drink, I’d go to Bar Tocador for a proper daiquiri.

We already know that the local clothing designer and owner of Main Street boutique and spa, Sunja Link Body Shoppe, has discerning taste when it comes to the products and items that she puts on her body. So we're unsurprised that she's equally thoughtful about what food and drink she prefers to put into it.
