Vancouver Would Be Cooler If… We Focused On Everyday Fun More Than View Corridors

(via Reddit) This cool slide set-up outside Overvecht Station in Utrecht suggests that the Dutch city has figured out a way to inject some ancillary fun into the everyday lives of its citizens. It’s too bad our cultures are so fundamentally different. While theirs is permissive and trusting, ours has the measure of its enjoyments determined by the narrow void between lawyers and liabilities. The consequence of that difference is the slight pang of despair that comes when we have trouble imagining how awesome it would be to slide from Beatty to Abbott out of Stadium Station or down the whole of Yew St. to Kits Beach. “That would never be allowed here” is a terrible thing to think of one’s own city. Yeah, but would you look at those mountains! doesn’t really crack it as a quality rebuff.
