Vancouver Special | Architecture | Recently included in the Vancouver Sun’s Top Ten Eyesores list, The Vancouver Special is a beloved, working-class institution. Cheap materials allowed for it’s proliferation, and our mild climate meant that the basement only needed to extend about a foot into the soil, making it a de facto ground floor instead (two floors for the price of one!). A firm part of our cultural ethos, it has inspired a music compilation, a store, and a book by Charles Demers.
