PIE | Thursday is Pi Day. Obviously you’ll want to pay your respects by stuffing your face with a slice of pie. Our picks? The Pie Shoppe (pull up a seat and enjoy yourself a some of their legendary lemon buttermilk before you scoop up a savoury pie to take home for dinner) and The Pie Hole (get in on their Pi Day offer of 4″ pies for $3.14 while supplies last). Can’t decide? Hit both establishments. The more pie the better, right?

SKATE | Dry pavement season is coming. Get back into the groove with an indoor rollerskate jam this Saturday. Expect music, knee high socks and a satin jacket or two. No skates? No problem. VEGAN MARKET | You don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy the Vegan Night Market going down at the Waldorf Hotel this Thursday night. The event features a bunch of animal-friendly and environmentally-conscious vendors selling everything from baked goods, chocolate, kombucha and veggie foods to ethical undies, accessories and hair care — plus a bike swap and live music! STICK | A handful of Vancouver’s most prolific wheat paste artists are getting together for their first gallery exhibition: Stick. Head to Red Gate this Thursday night for the opening night party and get up close to the artists who historically (and purposely) create under-the-radar art. We’ll be there and it’ll be a blast. Can’t make the opening? No worries, Stick continues until March 28th, and is viewable from 2pm to 4pm on the weekends. Need some background? Check out this recent Scout interview here and find out more about the exhibition there.

ART | The Made From Scraps project is a series of art-based events that challenge artists to create using salvaged materials. In the most recent volume of the series, Made From Scraps challenged 40 local artists to transform discarded BC Western Hemlock wood tiles into art. Now that the results are in and up on the walls it’s time for us to check out how these artists used a “diversity of creativity” to modify the leftovers into exhibition-worthy works. Hustle down to Space (1-4pm on both Saturday and Sunday) for a look. Each tile is on sale for $150. Find out more.

Sat, March 16 + Sun, March 17 | 1-4pm | Space 552 Clark Drive MAP

FEAST | St. Patrick’s Day is this Sunday. Skip the green beer and celebrate with a proper family-style meal at The Irish Heather. With a spread of corned beef, colcannon mashed potatoes, braised cabbage, honey roasted carrots, apple crumble and pint of Guinness (or a glass of wine), “Your Ma’s Kitchen” traditional St. Patricks Day dinner sounds like just the ticket. Reservations strongly recommended. Find out more.

Sun, Mar. 17 | 1pm, 3pm and 5pm | $45 | The Irish Heather 248 East Georgia St. MAP

EAT LOCAL | Although it doesn’t technically kick in until next week, tasty signs of spring are already starting to pop up at markets and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Schedule yourself a trip to one of two Winter Farmers Markets this weekend to score some stinging nettles, fresh chives, green onions, young lettuce and lovely eggs from happy chickens. Also still on the scene: hearty root vegetables, fresh bread, dried fruits and loads of preserves. Eat Local! Find out more.

LEARN | UBC’s Green College has us covered with their Monday night lecture: The Resurgence of Arms Racing and the Collapse of Nuclear Arms Control. Andrew Lichterman (Western States Legal Foundation) visits to talk about things like political instability, nuclear weapons and the erosion of democracy. Don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom…consideration will also be given to what can be done to change things up. Thinking about a world free of nuclear threats sounds like a worthwhile way to occupy a Monday night, right? Find out more.
