The Scout List: Lemonade And The Best Streets Without Cars

img_4712

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit.

The Scout List is our carefully considered first rate list of super sweet things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week….

India and the West

The series, Music of the Whole World, aims to provide access to educational materials on the art of intercultural music-making. Whether you are a veteran composer, a beginning student of music, or simply a music lover wishing to learn more about the many musics of the world and the bridges between them, this series is one that you will not want to miss.

Car-Free Vancouver Day

september-2007-085

This Sunday, Car-Free Festivals will pop up in Kitsilano, the West End (on Denman Street, between Davie and Robson ), Main Street (between 12th Ave and King Ed), and Commercial Drive (between Venables and 1st Ave). Each Festival was envisioned and organized by the local core organizers, and each had a unique flavour. Lifted directly from the Car-Free Vancouver website: You can expect to see Commercial Drive buzzing with street hockey, revolutionary knitting circles, roller disco, a Healing Garden, tons of babies and dogs, and merry mayhem abundant. On Main, look for tons of local vendors, story-telling, food, arts and crafts, 7 music stages and a grafitti wall. In the West End there will be a spoken word tent, dance classes, world music, community tables and a parade. Kits will be Block Party central – hop from one to the next, there will be street “living rooms”, dances, performers and potlucks.

Julie Doiron with Dog Day

From Aaron over at the Bilt: “She’s won a Juno, been shortlisted for the Polaris Prize and is a founding member of one of the most legendary bands in Canadian indie-rock history. I rest my case. You must see Julie Doiron. Oh, and her new record is pretty amazing…. Halifax’s Dog Day have got the goods to be a terrific pure pop band, capable of crafting sublime melodies and hooks, but their fondness for the noisier virtues of the indie rock canon of the ’90s ensures that they’ll never be quite so easy to pin down.

Au Revoir Simone

The New York based flock of lithe young songstresses known as Au Revoir Simone play Richards tonight. Not sure if the venue is a great fit for this ethereal sounding indie-pop band, but there is only one way to find out. If you’re not alltogether down with the element of surprise when it comes to laying down money for a gig – head over to the band’s myspace page for a listen.

She lives by the beach in Vancouver and enjoys wandering aimlessly through the city’s shops and streets with her best friend – a beat up, sticky, grimy, and uncooperative camera.

  1. When I was there earlier this week, Zulu couldn’t find their tickets for Julie Doiron. They weren’t sure they were sold out…they just couldn’t find them.

Red Cat had five tickets today. Now they have four 😀
