The Pie Shoppe is Set to Close This Month

Prepare yourself for heartbreak: Sisters and business partners Stephanie and Andrea French have just announced that they are closing The Pie Shoppe at 1875 Powell Street later this month.

The shop began in late 2012, as a tiny hole-in-the-wall on Gore – back then, a relatively sleepy corner of Chinatown. The tiny pie and coffee shop kicked things up with a fresh shot of energy and enthusiasm. There was almost nowhere to sit, and pie regularly sold out before I got there in the later afternoons, but the pair were doing something different—and fun—and despite my disappointment at often leaving empty-handed, I was smitten: not only with the lemon buttermilk pie but with the sisters and their candid, kind and realistic takes. I was immediately in love, and thankful for their arrival on the scene. (Check out our first coverage of The Pie Shoppe from December 15th, 2012 here.)

When they relocated to 1875 Powell Street, into a space four times the size of their original spot, Stephanie and Andrea amped up production of their signature offerings (chocolate pecan, lemon buttermilk and an array of fresh fruit pies) and added seating. They also expanded their menu to include meat pies, hand pies, and the occasional quiche/salad situation. More recently, they expanded the concept of the pie to include pizza, opening their doors Wednesday through Sunday nights to offer a rotating lineup of pizzas alongside a menu of thoughtfully chosen natural wine, beer and cider. Over the years, they have supported the community with pop-up dinners, markets, events and parties. They also championed local farms and the farmers working them. They played fair, worked hard, and created something really special.

Last pizza, pie and wine service will go down on the following nights – reservations recommended.

Saturday, September 14th

I’m going to miss the fuck out of this place.

Stephanie and Andi: you know I love you; I hope you also know how much I respect you. Thank you for making this city (and my world) so much better with The Pie Shoppe.
