Welcome to the Vancouver Lexicon. Its purpose is to pin down the patois of the City of Vancouver by recording its toponyms, nicknames, slang terms, personalities, places, and other Van-centric things. Full A-Z here.
Shift, The | sports, hockey | A legendary Vancouver Canucks shift against the Edmonton Oilers on October 13th, 2007. Showcasing the amazing skills of the Sedin twins (Henrik and Daniel), “The Shift” began on the powerplay, continued even-strength and ended with a goal by Daniel (assisted by Henrik). It remains the most dominant continuous 2:15 of Canucks hockey ever played. There have been other “shifts” of remarkable note (eg. Shift 2.0, Shift 3.0, Shift 4.0), but this is the one that announced to the NHL that the Swedish pair – retired after the 2018 season – were destined for greatness and the Hall of Fame. Watch and respect.
Usage | “Even though we’ve gone all the way to the Stanley Cup Final three times, my biggest Canucks thrill of all time remains The Shift.”
