by Ken Tsui | Perhaps the most common conversations in Vancouver these days centre on the acute rarity of affordable living spaces. Whether it’s around the dinner table with friends or family or marching down the street in protest with fellow citizens, it’s clear that Vancouverites are feeling the constant pinches and sucker-punches of living life in an increasingly expensive city.
The SFU Continuing Studies Program has been home to one of the most interesting voices in the discussions around the issue ever since they invited Michael Geller to share his creative wisdom on assuaging the housing crisis. Working four decades as an architect, planner, real estate consultant and property developer, he has become an active voice in advocating for creative new ideas to address our ever-growing affordability crisis.
On April 4th, he returns to the podium for the Affordable Housing Redux (a continuation of his previous lectures, 12 Affordable Housing Ideas and 12 More Affordable Housing Ideas). This talk explores the recent housing initiatives and examines the possibilities to meet the demand for more affordable housing choices. Admission is free but you must register online. His lectures are popular so you won’t want to delay!

Thanks for the kind words and promoting this talk. What isn’t in the program is that I will start with a 70 year overview of housing programs in Vancouver (because I turn 70 this year!) This will include the federal, provincial and municipal initiatives, especially those since the early 70s. I will then offer some insight into how land, construction, soft costs and profit are determined. Then, based on all of that, I’ll set out some suggestions on what we might do differently, to hopefully contain, and possibly reduce costs in some areas. I hope some of you will join me, either in the room, or on-line with a case of beer or large bottle of wine!
