Naked Couple Plaque Mankind Sent Into Space In The 1970s

(via) Duane King, a Portland-based designer obsessed with space exploration, is making exact replicas of the awesomely iconic plaques that NASA commissioned Carl Sagan and Frank Drake to design and put on board the 1972 Pioneer 10 and 1973 Pioneer 11 space probes just in case they were ever found by…you know…aliens. They were made of gold-anodized aluminum and depicted a naked man and woman – drawn by Sagan’s then wife, Linda – alongside symbols indicating where the spacecrafts originated from. We’ve always taken great comfort in the fact that the first objects to ever had the escape velocity to go beyond our solar system included “galactic greeting cards” with imagery of our species without any pants on. King says it’s “quite possibly the most ambitious piece of visual communication ever conceived” and calls it “a message in a bottle cast into the cosmic ocean.” Well, that and a rather forward ‘hello’, wouldn’t you say? The designer recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project with the bold goal of $70,000. With only two days left, current pledges stand to exceed that mark by over $200,000. Because science!
