A no messing around guide to the coolest things to eat, drink and do in Vancouver and beyond. Community. Not clickbait.

Scout List: On East Side Pride, Design Nerds And Swap-O-Ramas

IMG_1277

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit.

The Scout List is our carefully considered first rate list of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…

The Scout List

I heard about Design Nerds the other night at Pecha Kucha. It sounded sort of cool: Design Nerds bring you the The Urban Interventions Jam, “an opportunity for people to brainstorm new intervention ideas for Vancouver that can be completed by small teams within a day (or a few), with little or no budget. The Toronto Design Nerds will host a similar jam, and both cities will participate in documenting their Interventions for National Urban Interventions Day (date TBA).

Hooray! The season of the outdoor movie screenings is upon us. Catch a fresh air flick at the UBC Rugby fields this Friday night. The thing is – and it’s better that I tell you now than you go all the way out there and feel cheated – the organizers picked New Moon as the flick for the event. So…maybe not. Thought I’d mention it anyway.
June 26 | 9:30pm – 11pm | UBC Rugby Fields | FREE and (theoretically) fun

You know how you’re always saying people should support the arts or that you’d love to buy some original art to replace that mass produced Ikea crap that you have going on? Well, here is your chance to do it without selling your kidneys to finance it. One Night, 200 Artists, 400 Pieces, $200 each. Entrance is by donation (a recommended donation of $5). There’s a cool event going on at the Museum of Vancouver this weekend. Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a clothing and craft supply swap “in which a community explores reuse and creativity through the recycling of used clothing. A series of DIY stations will be on-hand to unleash your creativity including screen printing by Blim and sewing stations by Plush On Main.” So – gather up your used clothing and the art supplies you thought you would use but didn’t, pop them into your rucksack and take them to the museum to trade for other supplies that you can turn into something new – right on the spot. The screen printing and sewing stations will be right there so that you can transform your newly acquired bits while you are still inspired rather than risk taking them home where they could sit in a corner for eight months. Many crafty experts will be on hand to inspire you. Good gig all around. Hook up with Gotcraft? for details.
June 26 | 11 am – 4 pm | Museum of Vancouver, 1100 Chestnut Street |$6

The 18th Annual Little Mountain & Riley Park Festival is coming to deliver the goods with live music, artisan craft tables, carnival games, face painting and the obligitory bouncy castle. There might even be mini doughnuts – you never know.
June 27 | 11 am – 4 pm | Riley Park Community Centre (50 East 30)

It’s always a delight to see Grandview park used for something festive. This weekend the few guys that use the green space to ‘sleep it off’ and the dude selling broken toasters and beaded plant hangers are making way for East Side Pride. Liv Wade, Jackie a Go-Go and Kieran Strange provide entertainment. Peruse the literature and displays at info booths from local organizations, admire (and purchase?) trinkets made by local artists, and generally feel the good vibe.
June 26 | 1 am – 5 pm | Grandview Park (Commercial Drive) | FREE

Lose the car and head to Broadway for Greek Day. Live music, authentic Greek food and, yes – Soccer.
June 27 | 11 am – 9 pm | Broadway (between Macdonald and Blenheim)

Head down to Centre A on Tuesday night to check out the works of over 25 artists who live and work in the Downtown Eastside.
June 29 | Centre A (2 West Hastings (at Carall) | FREE

PS. Don’t forget the Canada Day parade route may have an impact on your plans on July 1st. It starts 7pm at Georgia & Broughton, and ends at Thurlow & Pender some time around 9pm. Good times accordingly…
