Vancouver Would Be Cooler If It Had Bus Stop Shelters Like The Former USSR

The point of VWBCI is to open local minds to outside practices, concepts, and ideas that might stand to improve our greater civic situation in a parallel universe where coolness was valued more than practicality and funds spent on public works of art were raised by way of a special NIMBY tax levied against serial complainers.

(via) We’ve taken Vancouver’s inflexibly uninteresting bus shelters to task in the past by calling attention to the way they roll in Austria and Orlando, not knowing that the former USSR was a veritable gold mine of bus stop originality, as revealed in roving photographer Christopher Herwig’s awesome book, Soviet Bus Stops:

The local bus stop proved to be fertile ground for local artistic experimentation in the Soviet period, and was built seemingly without design restrictions or budgetary concerns. The result is an astonishing variety of styles and types across the region, from the strictest Brutalism to exuberant whimsy.

Soviet Bus Stops is the most comprehensive and diverse collection of Soviet bus stop design ever assembled, including examples from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Abkhazia, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Estonia.

Vancouver (and the World) Would be Cooler If Our Housing Crisis Was Solved Via Video Games

There is nothing special about Vancouver's lack of affordable housing...but what is special about Dublin, Ireland’s housing crisis, is that it's the catalyst and subject matter of a new 16-bit "anti-landlordist" video game, called Mega Dreoilín.

Vancouver Would Be Cooler If We Had More Safe Indoor Spaces for Skateboarding

Its vaulted ceilings may have once carried the tenors and altos of Catholic choirboys, but nowadays the acoustics of the abandoned St. Liborius Church have been repurposed to carry the screeches and echoes characteristic of a DIY Skatepark. We think Vancouver would be cooler if we had an all-inclusive indoor community skatepark of our own...

Vancouver Would Be Cooler If It Had a Massive Floating Housing Project at the Port

Imagine a colourful, mixed-used, housing complex like Amsterdam's Silodam floating at the foot of Victoria Drive.
