Teas & Two Slices: On Bashing Unions & Black Market Farmers

by Sean Orr | Morning Brew is now apparently working for the Fraser Institute. Yet another union-bashing, market-fundamentalist rag blog to rail against.

Editorial: Real issue gets lost when mud is thrown.

These kinds of comments, especially over such an emotionally charged issue as lobbying for a needle exchange in a famously conservative community, are counterproductive

But you just said that it was emotionally charged! The reason Vancouver has one is precisely because Livingstone is emotionally charged. And don’t be so facetious. Of course this is an ideological issue.

Meanwhile, The Vancouver Sun breaks the story on farmer’s markets. These clandestine meetings in public parks where all sorts of underground produce are exchanged are a direct threat to your local supermarket who are forced to painstakingly import theirs from Mexico.

The Cost of Cruising. Starring Al Pacino sent deep undercover to the urban world of gay S&M Leather bars in the Meatpacking District of the West Village in order to track down a serial killer targeting gays. I just hope they don’t get into docking.

  1. Keeping the Morning Brew format the same was a mistake. I remember the post where the editors said they were looking for someone to take over the column but make it their own. So far no one has succeeded, and all the posts have been weak imitations of the past filled with forced angst.

The reality is, the person behind the column is what makes it work. Regardless of how talented they may be, the poor writers are being forced to work with the ghost of Sean Orr on their shoulders – hardly an enviable task – and neither have had the opportunity to develop their own voice.

    FREE THE MORNING BREW.

  2. Sean, you’ve lost touch. Less time taking hits at the boxing and night clubs, and more time quietly putting together the pieces for actual news.

But hey, fluff is fluff and there’s nothing wrong with entertainment writing.

  3. I don’t know Sean your blurb about the Morning Brew seems to be a little personal. You can’t really fault Alana for her thoughts on the unions. To a certain degree it’s true, especially when she brings up a good example such as that. I mean the woman was given 3 months to get something from a doctor. It’s not that hard. I’ve been there, I was able to get something. Even if they can’t find the cause of the problem, it’s just a doctors note. Sounds to me like there is something you need to let go of my friend.

I also don’t know where you were going with the farmers market either. Your description was a little misleading, I was expecting an article about farmers markets taking jobs away from those who work for the major supermarkets, I was ready to join the resistance myself, but what I got was a pretty decent article about the growth of local farmers markets and what it means to local farmers, I mean thanks for sharing and all, but you don’t have to take a negative tone to everything.

  4. Not that I don’t have a sense of humor, it’s merely misplaced comic timing.

  5. Personally I thought it was hilarious and actually led to me reading the whole article looking for a Buzz Hargrove like quote about how Farmer’s Markets are stealing jobs from hard working union members.
