On Quiet Snowmobiles And Who Smashed The Window At Cuchillo?

IMG_4939

by Sean Orr | Giving Translink a run for their money: CP Rail refuses to pay for Lac-Mégantic clean-up. It’s worth keeping in mind that CP’s Hunter Harrison is the highest paid CEO in Canada…

Meanwhile, BC Ferries executives see salaries and perks boosted. Wow. Even the guy who gives out the raises gets a raise.

BC Hydro’s electricity trading subsidiary Powerex has agreed to pay California $750 million so that they don’t get sued for doing absolutely nothing wrong. I’m not super good at math so I had a few rolling brownouts just trying to make sense of that article.

Non-Onion article of the day: Canadian Forces Test Stealth Snowmobile.

Not to point any fingers, but: Police investigating if Cuchillo restaurant vandalism linked to Downtown Eastside anti-gentrification protests. “Unless they get some suspect information that would directly link them, there is no way for us at this point to link them”. So we’re just going to go ahead and link them via pure speculation.

Metro’s economy riding on TransLink funding referendum. “No one has any idea how this referendum will be structured, who will organize it (“Not us,” say the mayors), what funding options will be on the ballot, what projects will be built – or not – because of it, what the question(s) will be or how much public funding – if any – is available to support which sides”. Ugh. Better make it a “no” question because that is what everyone is going to vote for when they find out that Translink wants money. I suggest something like: “Do you not want to explore new funding models?”

Traitor Joe’s: Trader Joe’s drags a pirate to court. Never mind that. What is this guy’s carbon footprint!?

Good vibrations: Music lover donating 4,000 CDs to hospital.

  1. Sean, while we’re on the Translink thing, no mention of the non-transferability issue of hard print bus tickets to the Compass Card system?

While we’re at it, thoughts on increased severity of DUIs recently without extending Sky Train hours? I thought for sure the trains should be extended past 1:15am on Fri/Sat but then found out about the Night Bus times/routes and though I’d prefer to still catch a later train, I guess there’s still a transit option past the last train.

Can and will take a cab (to Richmond) when I have to but its we apparently have the most expensive cab fare in N.America and fewest cabs as well. http://archive.citycaucus.com/2011/08/we-have-fewer-cabs-in-vancouver-and-we-pay-more. Im guessing you’re already aware of this and probably feel the same as everyone else but any other thoughts on this stuff? Thanks.

  2. See the previous Tea and Two Slices for that particular bit of outrage regarding Translink. I had a pretty sizeable list AND a response from previous spokesperson Ken Hardie. I linked to an article by Miranda Nelson in the Georgia Straight which I felt was a good list of complaints also. But yeah, sheer outrage.

  3. what does CP’s CEO pay package have to do with their legal obligation to clean up Lac Megantic? CP is doing their job – looking out for the interests of their shareholders. They aren’t some evil empire of no-hearted corporate goons out to screw us over.

  4. Saw the post, Sean. Missed that earlier. The Arbutus route over Cambie for the Canada Line – would that ultimately been a better route than Cambie?

Seems that its way too far west, no? With a longer route from downtown to Richmond and hits far less of the major stops such as Oakridge, Langara, QE Park, businesses on Cambie (though of course theres a caveat there but have they not benefitted post-completion?), City Hall and the huge number of stuff in that vicinity.

Were the major reasons for Arbutus less cost and less disruption/impact to businesses during construction (due to that rail wa already being there)? Seems like if they do Arbutus instead, would have likely went down as one of the biggest bonehead decisions in that ever long laundry list of them?
