Tea & Two Slices: On Poli-Speak And The Reality Of Road Racism

by Sean Orr | Don’t Ban Offshore Drilling in the arctic because there is absolutely no risk because “There is nothing happening in the Arctic, so, there is no danger of a blowout because there is no drilling going on there at the present time.” Also there is probably also no need to ban cod fishing in Newfoundland because there is none. Can I get a post hoc ergo propter hoc?

Road racism on the rise in Metro Vancouver. FYI, if you only hate Chinese people when you are driving, you actually hate Chinese people all the time.

Premier vows to consider Pickton inquiry. Well, isn’t that some of the sweetest poli-speak you ever heard? ‘I promise to do everything in my power…to think about it’.

Meanwhile, Vancouver privacy advocate “thinks there’s a crime involved” at Opus Hotel wherein they beam security images of the bar onto a TV screen above the men’s urinals. As with all CBC stories of this nature however, the comment section alone provides hours of entertainment. For example, “Any male will tell you that the washroom is a very business oriented place with little room for odd behavior”.

Thornton Park squatters anger nearby resident. “Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed”.  Herman Melville

  1. Some observations from a former delivery driver:
I think there is a kernel of truth from which the ignorant stereotype that “all Asian drivers are terrible” has bloomed.
Many Chinese people living in Vancouver, that is, those who were born in China and immigrated to Canada as adults, are not very good drivers, but for good reason. China is not a car culture and many Chinese have little experience with cars before they come here. Unlike other Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, few Chinese drive, and what’s more, few grow up around cars. While that is changing, for many of the Chinese people who now call Vancouver home, the China of their youth was one largely devoid of motordom. I think it’s understandable that they would be intimidated, when as adults, they get behind the wheel of a car for the first time, especially when all the traffic signs are in a language they are unfamiliar with.
Second generation Chinese, who grow up around cars and car culture here in Canada, who spend their entire youth peering out the passenger window of a car, observing how traffic works, are obviously going to be MUCH better drivers.
Clearly not all Asians are lousy drivers, after all, the Japanese have dominated motorcycle racing (Daijiro Kato, for example), and invented drift racing. There are cultural differences (ie, environmental factors) which make some people better drivers than others. It has nothing to do with race, or genetics, etc.
At any rate, I think tougher standards for attaining a drivers license would benefit everyone on the road.
