Surely any impact would beget more impacts. Collisions at high speed (these things are dizzy quick) would result in thousands of small bullets and big chunks of shrapnel hurtling like malevolent clouds in orbit, homing in on others, then others, and – one can easily imagine – eventually all. All it takes is a single accident and some bad luck. Imagine what a single metal fragment traveling at 7 kilometers a second could do to a communications satellite! I wonder how long it will be before we live in a world encircled by a Saturn-like ring of our need to entertain and inform ourselves…
